Harold Hamm and his wife Sue Ann Arnall are going through one of the messiest, and most expensive divorces in history. Hamm married his wife without a prenuptial agreement, so all bets are off for this one. Now, the battle is over who is going to get the money and how much they will receive.
The Internet is buzzing over the fact that a picture was taken of a handwritten check for $974.8 million dollars that Hamm’s wife refused to take. Hamm’s attorneys were stunned that the woman’s lawyers advised her not to take the check, but it appears that she could jeopardize her case by taking it.
Hamm says that this amount is what he owes his ex-wife, based on a ruling by a judge in Oklahoma. But apparently, her attorneys do not agree.
“Ms. Arnall, through her counsel, stated that they were rejecting the … payment because Ms. Arnall did not want to risk the dismissal of her appeal by acceptance of the benefits,” her attorney, Michael Burrage wrote.
Arnall and Hamm have both appealed the earlier divorce settlement. The appeal is going to be heard by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Arnall is an executive with Continental, and was married to Hamm for 26 years. Her attorneys say that the family fortune is as high as $18 billion dollars, and she has no interest in settling for “only” a billion.
Hamm has paid his wife $20 million during their divorce proceedings so far. The odd question to ask is why he’s the one who controls the family finances, dolling out checks to her, if the money is property of both spouses. Hamm says he’s not worth the entire $18 billion. A large chunk of his wealth comes from his ownership stake in Continental, which has declined in value due to changing in oil prices.
