Dr Boyce Watkins: Stop comparing yourself to other people!

by Dr Boyce Watkins

I heard a friend the other day say to me that she was very proud of the fact that she was doing better than all of her friends.  She said, “We all started off poor, and now I’m doing really well for myself.”

The woman is very sharp and could have done anything with her life.   But while she was successful in a certain right, I personally felt that she had not reached her potential.  Part of the reason I believe that she didn’t reach her fullest potential is that she’d always compared herself to what many would consider to be a pretty low standard.

I did this video to remind you that how you set standards plays a huge role in determining your outcomes.  Those with high standards tend to do far better than those with low standards, because the peer pressure of low expectations affects us all.  This is some of the advice I gave the students in my Black Keys to Greatness Program on goal-setting, time management and overcoming obstacles.  I hope that this advice helps you too.

The video is below.
