Financial Lovemaking: Here’s a formula for making your life into a living hell

by Dr Boyce Watkins

One of the greatest assets any person can build in their life is the simple idea of thoughtfulness.  You’d be amazed at how many problems are solvable, not by being the smartest person on earth, but by taking your time to think things through.   I learned this as a graduate student of mathematics, when we would get a problem to solve that literally took a week of work.  We’d start every problem devastated, not having a clue on how to solve it.  But by mulling it over, thinking about it from different angles, talking to classmates and sleeping on it, we would slowly work our way to the solution.

I found that this strategy of problem-solving really helped me a great deal in my life.  You’d be amazed at what insights you can come to by looking at something from a thousand different angles.

There are important decisions that many of us make in our daily lives that affect the quality of our long-term existence. By not thinking these choices all the way through, we can end up miserable, broke, unhealthy and filled with remorse.  Many human choices are built on raw instinct, relying on the part of the brain that simply reacts rather than contemplates.  While this form of decision-making can be helpful in certain areas of our lives (like running from gunshots or in the boxing ring), it may not be good for making important consumer or relationship choices.

One of those important decisions we make is choosing the person we are going to spend the rest of our lives with. Many of us choose our mates based on simple, one-dimensional criteria that may or may not be consistent with our personal long-term objectives.  This can be devastating when the consequences start rolling in, because it is difficult to get ahead in the world if you’re always cleaning up after yourself.  So sometimes, just thinking things through can help you to avoid a world of problems later on down the road.

In this episode of Financial Lovemaking, I speak with Ebony Magazine Entertainment Director S. Tia Brown about how we go about making our life choices and how that may impact our personal outcomes in life. In other words, we talk about ways that people end up making themselves miserable, and how to avoid those same mistakes.
