Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ Has Become The Highest Grossing Debut Screenplay In Movie History

By Ryan Velez

A short time ago, we reported that Jordan Peele’s first film, Get Out, not only smashed expectations but earned the first-time director a new record, becoming the first Black writer-director to make a $100 million debut film. Now, Celebrity Net Worth reports that having crossed the $150 million domestic margin, Get Out is now positioned ahead of The Blair Witch Project as the highest-grossing original screenplay debut in movie history, a record that was held for nearly 20 years.

The two movies had quite some similarities, both being low-budget horror films. In general, horror films are popular for newcomer writers and filmmakers because they are the genre that best tends to make a good profit for relatively little cost. As a result, studios are more likely to give them a chance, which is likely what happened to Get Out.

Of course, in the face of all this success, Peele now is being presented the opportunity to enter a whole new world of film-making. Reportedly, Warner Bros. has offered him the chance to run a remake of the popular Japanese animated film Akira. The Akira remake itself has been in varying degrees of development for years, and it is easy to see why, as balancing its Japanese origins with the expectations of Western audiences is a difficult act to pull off. If Peele takes this project on, he would likely have many of the same tools, including big stars, a massive budget, and plenty of CGI to use for special effects.

While the Akira project would certainly be a massive leap in terms of a profile for Peele’s filmmaking, it remains to be seen whether or not this will be the type of film he will be going for from now on. During Get Out’s initial theater run, Peele said that he had wanted to continue to make more films on what he described as “social demons.” It will be interesting to see whether he continues with his initial plan, leaps on the opportunities being presented to him, or tries to use this newfound platform to try and bring his idea to a wider audience. One thing is for certain, moviegoers can’t wait to find out what the answer is.
