It would probably be a gross understatement to say that the day a couple gets married is one of the most important days in their lives — only rivaled by the arrival of the tiny new additions to the family. So, it also makes sense to pull all the stops and splurge on that one day and make it a memorable one.
But, how would you feel if you had to foot a $500,000 bill for just that one day?
Well, that’s exactly what Yandy Smith and Mendeecees Harris spent to celebrate their “Love & Hip Hop” wedding. The list of the extravagance that went into the lavish wedding included a cake that cost $5,7000, flowers worth $90,000, $69,000 for Yandy’s two Pnina Tornai dresses, $18,500 for food and drinks, and $12,500 for miscellaneous party favors.
Oh, and the price of their rings was $42,000.
Moving on to the bridesmaids, the total bill for their dresses came to $18,400, while each pair of shoes cost $245.
Mendeecee’s black and blue combo-suit, made by designer ARI, would normally have cost him $1,395. After some alterations and a little customization to the suit, the bill climbed up to $2,500. Of course, he couldn’t leave his father out, and also threw in another suit for Juelz Santana, so the bill for the suits climbed even higher, reaching $7,500.
For the banquet, the main dish was a selection of duck, filet mignon and salmon. Adding that to the costs for the catering and serving staff, the total came to $18,500.
And then there were the decorated and over-the-top, blinged-out selfie sticks that were wedding favors, which surprised everyone. The total bill for those was $12,500.
So, the final bill eventually reached $500,000. Hopefully the couple invests even more into the marriage than they did in the wedding.
This massive over-funded wedding comes against the backdrop of Mendeecees Harris being convicted on drug trafficking charges. The groom is on his way to prison for a series of very serious drug-related crimes, and will have to pay the government a great deal of money for restitution.
Finance PhD Dr Boyce Watkins says that overspending on weddings can be tempting, and it can set you back for life.
“There are people who are paying for their wedding long after they’ve been divorced,” said Dr Watkins, author of the book, “Financial Lovemaking.” ” To incur such a massive expense right before heading to prison is reflective of a couple that may be thinking a lot more about the present than the future. I wish them the best, but it’s hard not to imagine a difficult road ahead for this family. Having the head of your household in the penitentiary can be economically devastating.”
According to CostOfWedding.com, the average cost of an American wedding is roughly $25,000. Most people spend under $10,000. So, based on what the average couple does in America, this family may have gone way overboard.
