Mudbound was a great triumph for all involved, but perhaps no one would be happier about this than Kendu Issacs. The estranged husband of Mary J. Blige has been fighting for spousal support for what seems like ages, but Madame Noire reports that there’s no payday for him, or for Mary, for that matter.
Documents obtained by The Blast suggest that Blige not only blames him for her current financial situation, she also says that she lost money over her involvement in the critically praised Netflix film. The document states “The film “Mudbound” for example has produced no net income for Petitioner, but has garnered her critical acclaim and award nominations. Pursuant to the Mudbound contract, the expenses Petitioner was required to pay in connection with filming Mudbound were greater than her salary.” Why would she even do this? Well again, this goes back to her financial situation. Being low on money means she has to seek out new income-generating projects. Some of these do more for her brand and image than her pocket, and it looks like Mudbound falls in that category.
Blige’s main income source comes from touring these days, but even that well may be drying up. According to her, being more of a legacy artist, there isn’t the market for massive tours like current artists due. And yet, she can’t rest on her laurels because she doesn’t own her music catalog and owes $25 million for advances she’s taken throughout her career.
The last we reported on the divorce, Issacs was claiming the divorce was so stressful that he was hospitalized. He also blamed Blige’s “divorce songs” for harming his career as a manager. The two accumulated $12 million in debt while he managed her. She mentioned how he cheated on her while promoting Mudbound back in September.
“I thought someone loved me, right? Turns out, he was a con artist and he didn’t, and now he’s coming after me for all my money.” “When you come out of something like that, you realize you were never the one. There was someone else that was his queen. I got played. I got suckered. I have to keep smiling and keep my spirits up because this is designed to kill me.”
