Shelly Garrett is a man that has managed to leave an indelible mark in the theater entertainment industry. The actor, who is estimated to have a net worth of $10 million, is fondly known as “The Godfather of Urban Theater.”
Garrett started his theater career 29 years ago in 1986. His debut work was the stage play “Beauty Shop,” which was seen by over four million people and still holds box office records in over 50 cities across the United States to this day, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, and Chicago.
That first step into comedy has led him into a life of laughter in theater, and Garrett has mastered the art. He says, “Comedy is a difficult art. The key is timing and if it’s not there, the entire production simply becomes a waste.”
After watching “Beauty Shop” in 1990 at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans, Tyler Perry, one of the most successful producers and actors at the moment, said that it gave him “great inspiration” to become a playwright.
Similarly, David E. Talbert said that after seeing the show at the Beverley Theater in Beverley Hills, it changed his life because he knew he was destined to become a playwright.
Garrett has starred in movies like 1979’s Love at First Bite, as well as in episodes of “Gimme a Break!” between 1986 and 1987. He also appeared “227” in 1988.
In 2006, he made an appearance in a TV documentary titled Backstage on the Black Stage.
Garrett has been honored with many awards during his lifetime, including being given the keys to more than 20 American cities, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1992), over 25 city and state proclamations and numerous plaques, trophies, and awards.
