On average a Judge Magistrates earns $80,000 to $120,000 each year. According to the NY Times, Federal District Judges make over $160,000 a year. The Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court makes just over $225,000. Judge Judy makes $900,000 each and every day she works.
That’s right. Judy Sheindlin may be fun to watch, but she is also probably the smartest TV personality on the planet. She has negotiated her contract to afford her the maximum time off with the maximum pay. Would you believe she works 110 days a year for $20 million? She doesn’t. How about 75 days for $35 million? Also not right. Judge Judy works just one day a week – 52 days per year – for a whopping $47 million, and that’s just her disclosed base salary. The amount of her other perks, benefits, and bonuses is not known.
To put this in perspective, when you think about crazy rich paydays, most people think of sports stars. Yet, according to Forbes, the only current sports figures in the world earning a higher base salary than Judge Judy are Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi. And, Judge Judy has been on the air since 1996.
While you may think she’s paid an awful lot of money for what she does, the network thinks she is worth every penny. According to CelebrityNetWorth, her show has consistently ranked as the number, highest-ranking show in daytime syndication. On an average day, she pulls in over 10 million viewers. That’s more than 2.5 times the numbers of Ellen or Dr. Phil.
CBS is so confident in her that they just gave her a 3-year contract extension, locking her in until 2020 with the potential for a raise after 2017. Thinking about perspective, once again, and putting those numbers in sports terminology, Judge Judy just signed a 3-year, $141 million contract extension.
The top two NFL contracts belong to the MVP quarterbacks Aaron Rogers and Russell Wilson. Rodgers with a 5-year $110 million contract and Wilson with a 4-year $88 million contract. Looks like, in terms of salary, the true MVP goes to the 70+ year old queen of daytime TV.
